Each year The Levitt Shell puts on over 50 FREE outdoor concerts May-July on Thursdays-Sundays. If you’re looking for a fun family event this is a great option. Visit their website to view a current list of performances.
This event is very kid friendly. As usual, the moms have lots of tips. Here are the highlights:
- Bring a blanket, chairs, bug spray, cash (food trucks, donation) and some food/drinks (you can bring your own alcohol)
- Whatever you bring, make it easy to carry/pull as you’ll probably be parking a ways from the Shell (you can park at the zoo)
- Bring glo sticks for the kids, hula hoops are fun too
- Have little kids take a nap as concerts go until 9pm
- Make a donation, they’ve got to pay for this somehow!

The BEST Memphis experience! Top notch music and stellar family entertainment for FREE-blankets, chairs, bug spray, cooler, cash, and glo sticks
Pack it all in a wagon… Parking is luck of the draw!
my hubby is the volunteer coordinator and hasn’t missed a show in years…I’ve missed two, I think. So, first and foremost, PLEASE COME!! We LOVE when we get newcomers! You will be hooked and will wonder why you haven’t been doing this for years! Kid-friendly…just keep your eyes on them, please! Dress for comfort, come ready to enjoy some excellent music, even if you’ve never heard of the band! Concerts are FREE! Got to levittshell.org for the line up. (Look up the bands on youtube to see what kind of music they play, but they are always great!) Bring a little to drop in the donation bucket so we can keep the music FREE! Shows end around 9-9:15. Food trucks every night. Sierra Nevada beer. Let me know if you want to know anything else! Too much to tell here…don’t want to hog this. Can’t wait to see y’all! Thanks for asking!!
Get there early to get a good spot with the amount of room you want – bring blankets/camp chairs. You can bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) or buy there, but the selection there will be limited.
Bring a big blanket for everyone to stretch out on after eating your picnic dinner. Also if you like a little wine or beer you can bring your own. Another tip is that if you have a dog you can bring it but they ask you to stay towards the back, so if you want to be closer leave poor Fido at home for the evening. Also wear your dancing shoes because everyone of all ages will dance in front of the stage. And finally, bring a little cash to contribute to the donation buckets that get passed around by volunteers.
If kids are younger, encourage a nap as concerts go until 9ish. Bring a picnic dinner/snacks, a blanket to sit on (or chairs). We also bring fun things for the kids like hula hoops or glow in the dark things. We love them!!
You can park over at the zoo and it isn’t a bad walk at all, with easy in and out if the streets are full and/or you aren’t into parallel parking
Bring a blanket or chairs, cooler, bug spray, snacks and drinks. If you don’t want to park a mile away come very early. And glow sticks so you can see you kids in the dark.
Bring a little cash to put in the bucket. The Levitt Shell survives on sponsors and donations. Often, when you give a donation, they give you a ticket and they draw for a prize at the end.
One thing I would say is if smoke bothers you or your kids, stay towards the middle. It is supposed to be a non smoking venue but people are smoke on the perimeter and that is not always enforced. That being said it is our most favorite place in Memphis.
Choose good weather
most people are in chairs…if you want to see anything bring a chair. It is sooo fun! Enjoy!
bug spray, chairs/blanket, picnic basket (full) (: – the lawn is very nice with enough room for children to run and play….enjoy!
Bring a blanket, a picnic meal, and plenty of water and sunscreen.
