Competitive sports programs are very different than recreational programs.  My family has not yet moved to competitive sports, so I can only speak from the experience of friends.  Before joining a competitive program I’d recommend you fully understand the time and financial commitment.  Know the frequency and location of practices, but also ask about extra practices (do you have them? how often?).  Know what equipment is required, how much it will cost and if there are any second-hand options available.  Know where games are held and when.

Make sure both your family and your child are committed to the time and work involved – I’ve met a few that were surprised by some aspects of programs and grumbled their way through the season.  Not fun for anyone.

A program is competitive unless otherwise noted.
