Looking to spend some time downtown? Here are some ideas of family-friendly things to do, and places to eat.
Ride the Trolley
NOTE: The Trolley is currently out of service.
The Trolley (click thru for a map and hours) is a fun and inexpensive way to tour downtown Memphis. Hop on one to go someplace, or just to ride around. The fare is $1 per person (cash only) and the drivers do not make change, so plan ahead!
There are three trolley routes: Main Street, Madison Avenue and the Riverfront Loop. The Main Street trolley just goes up and down main street, so it’s not all that exciting for kids. Same for the Madison Avenue line – it goes down Madison Avenue and back. The line to take with kids is the Riverfront Loop. It goes down Main Street (so read the signs on the front of the cars before you board) as well as alongside the Mississippi River. You’ll pass the Pyramid and the road construction nearby (boys love trucks!), Mud Island, the Riverboats, construction at Beale Street Landing and more. The entire loop takes about 30 minutes.
Visit the Peabody Ducks in the lobby and go on the Peabody Hotel roof to get a great view of the city – there are public bathrooms across from the elevator on the “skyview” (aka roof) floor. The morning march is more fun than the afternoon one, but both are entertaining. Kids get front-row seats!
Enjoy the View
Go to the roof of the Madison Hotel (there is a cover charge at night) for an awesome view of the river or the Peabody Hotel. If you go at night you can visit the home of the ducks.
Visit Beale Street Landing and the Island Play park.
Stop by the Memphis Farmers’ Market (Saturdays mid-April thru October)
