Horseback Riding Lessons

January 13, 2016 by Suzanne 8 Comments

A mom asked for recommendations for English riding lessons.  Isn’t it every little girl’s dream to own a horse, or a pony?  My boys have no such desire, but they do get to experience horses when they visit their aunt’s house in Massachusetts.  She breeds painted horses, so visiting the barn is part of seeing their cousins.  A huge treat for a couple of “city kids.”

That sure is a big dog, Grammy!

Here are the places the moms recommend:

Shelby Farms Stables
East Memphis
riding lessons, riding, summer camps, birthday parties

Aintree Farm Stables
Germantown
boarding, lessons
We go to Aintree Farms in Germantown. They focus on beginner, but go all the way up to Alderwood training and then competition. Showcase is a much nicer barn (we went for camp, and loved the barn), but Aintree is very nice, the horses are loved, the teachers are FABULOUS, and the rindgs are both indoor and outdoor.

Ashley Fant Show Stables
Collierville
boarding, lessons

Hunters Edge Stables
Memphis
boarding, lessons, camps
We have been with Hunter’s Edge Stables for a few years now. It is on Forest Hill Irene at Holmes. Excellent training for Hunter Jumper. The trainers are wonderful with the riders and horses.

Old West Special Trails
Collierville
boarding, lessons and camps. They also serve special needs kids.

Autumn Chase Farm
Collierville
boarding, lessons and camps.

Shady Creek Farm
Eads
camps, lessons, mini-lessons for riders 7 & under, couples rides and guided trail ride lessons

Trinity Farm
Lakeland
boarding, lessons, and therapeutic horseback riding.

Mid-South Dressage Academy
Hernando, MS
lessons, boarding

Oak View Stables
Olive Branch, MS
lessons, day camps

Raintree Equestrian Center
Olive Branch, MS

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy
Nesbit, MS
Serving people with disabilities in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas with equine assisted activities including therapeutic riding and barn lessons in a group and individual format.

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to EMM. I am a degreed equine professional who has been teaching children and adults competitively and recreationally for 18 years at Shady Creek Farm. After taking a professional hiatus while my children were very young, I am so pleased to be teaching again and invite you to come ride!

Shady Creek Farm teaches riding lessons and horsemanship to students in the Mid-South. Riders of all ages and experiences are welcomed to ride in a fun environment where being safe while learning new things and reaching your personal goals is the focus. Facilities include an indoor arena making riding available even during wet weather.

Activities include summer camps, private & small group lessons, mini-lessons for riders 7 & under, couples rides, guided trail ride lessons and school break camps.

The SCF GET UP Equine Assisted Psychotherapy program is excited to announce 2015 half-day camps. GET UP is a partnership between equine professionals and certified therapists to provide a unique experience for children on the Autism spectrum, ADD/ADHD and/or any other child who would benefit from working on social skills in a group or individual therapy sessions.

Menagerie Farm gives riding lessons for summer campers! They start teaching at the age of 4! Also, they offer a horseback riding show at the end of the week for parents, to show you what your children have learned!

Hi Everyone ! I came across this post searching google and just wanted to also introduce our barn to the forum ! We have a absolutely wonderful lesson program that includes 13 great lesson horses located just south of Memphis in Hernando, MS. It is called Mid -South Dressage Academy and does not just cater to high end dressage competitors but runs a friendly affordable lesson package /or single rate at a absolutely exquisite facility : ) I encourage anyone to stop by and visit ! We run schooling shows that cater around kids once a month as well where the kids can dress up to the theme’s we have .

Trinity Farms in Lakeland is one of the best English riding environments I’ve found in the area. I’ve visited many barns and know most all the area trainers and appreciate this barn environment for many reasons. Poppy Doyle is a great trainer for all ages, and she has many awesome lesson horses. She stresses safety and cleanliness, and is very encouraging to the young and inexperienced. All ages and all experience levels ride here, some own horses, some lease, and most simply take lessons. We highly recommend Trinity Farms.

I completely agree with the previous assessment of Trinity Farm and Poppy Doyle. My 10 year old daughter and I (after a 30 year hiatus) have both been riding there for about a year. It is a wonderful environment that is inclusive, educational, safety conscious and F-U-N!

We also LOVE Trinity Farm! My daughter started lessons there several months ago with Jenna McNair. Jenna and Poppy are both dedicated to the safety of the riders, (especially the little ones!) and place emphasis on developing not just skills, but personal character.
