Memphis Autism Resources

This Memphis Autism Resources list was originally compiled by Suzanne when a mom was looking for recommendations for Memphis Autism Resources to help her with her son, who was diagnosed with Aspergers.

Doctors and Specialists

Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities
711 Jefferson Avenue

  • In my search for a doctor, I found there is a dept at UT Boling Center that specializes in dealing with Aspergers. 448-6579.
  • We have been seeing Dr. Palmer @ UT Boling for 7 years and have been happy, we have also seen Dr. Susan McChesney @ Semmes-Murphey whom we liked very much as well. I am not a fan of Dr. Vickie Brewer but many others have seen her and have been happy with the outcome and the direction she provided. For a neurologist, there are many but we see Dr. Eastmead, who specializes in developmental neurology and also treated my ex-husband for Tourettes, anxiety, and OCD when he was a child. He was very knowledgeable about the avenues of help and support in the Memphis area. For a regular pediatrician that is “autism-friendly”, we like Dr. Joel Segal @ Laurelwood Pediatrics. Again just very impressed with the staff from front to back there.

Programs & Preschools

I work at Transformations Autism Treatment Center (in the Bartlett area).. we provide applied behavior analysis services for individuals with autism & Aspergers. it’s a really great place

ABA Development

(901) 634-8005 Email here

  • Jenni Helms runs The ABA Place in Bartlett. I have only met Tracy @ Transformations once but really liked her and have a friend whose sister works there and he speaks highly of the stuff they are doing there. Kyle is high functioning and we have always taken the ABA approach and have had success with it. There are so many more avenues of resources and help out there today than there was even 5-6 years ago. Good luck on your search.
  • ABA Development offers a variety of ABA-based therapy programs to children with autism or similar conditions, addressing challenges in the following areas: Behavior, Communication, Daily living, Social skills, Academics. We offer social skills classes on Monday, Friday, and Saturday and holiday/school break camps.

Harwood Center
711 Jefferson Ave
6560 Poplar (within MJCC)
8500 Walnut Grove (within Hope Presbyterian Preschool)
454 West Poplar Avenue (inside Collierville United Methodist)

  •  I have had two of my children attend The Harwood Center….downtown location. I was extremely happy with the services that they both received!…At 3 yrs old, both my children transitioned into the Shelby County School system. I was also very pleased with services that we received.
  •  Loved Harwood! Take the spot if you get one! All locations are wonderful–everyone I know that has ever needed them has had huge amounts of praise for Harwood.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder – anyone have any experience with it or recommendations for doctors or programs? Have a 12 year old boy who was originally diagnosed and medicated for ADHD. We suspected more was going on and that it was ODD – doctor agrees, though we are looking for a second opinion to be sure. Anyone know of any specialists?

My son is 9 and we took him to doctor William Little at Wholistic Healthcare Services on Estate Office Drive in Memphis. He did all the testing and we found out he didnt just have ADHD but he also had ODD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder without intellectual limitation. It took us about 3 months to get him in but it was worth the wait. In his reports he will give you steps that will help you with treatments. Each appointment is pretty long just to give you a heads up.

    Good morning,

My name is Justin Gibbs, the owner of Sensory World Memphis. I wanted to take the time out and personally invite you to our online store in hopes that Sensory World Memphis may become your direct distributor of your sensory needs. Here at Sensory World we understand the stress and anxiety experienced while dealing with a loved one with special needs. In a city where Autism is severely overlooked and growing everyday, our goal is to expand the accessibility of sensory resources. Though we are currently located online, we are centered right here in Memphis, TN so we can work directly with you on all of your special needs supplies. We have a set inventory at the moment but if there is something that you may need that is not on our list, we will make it our job to stock it. We are also a registered vendor in the State of Tennessee. If you are not too busy I would like for you to give me a call and/or schedule a meeting so that we may discuss how Sensory World Memphis can become one of your trusted vendors in the future. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

For the person seeking ABA resources in the South Memphis area – S. Third Street: You may have difficulty in finding board certified providers in that area, so you may have to travel to East Memphis or further points east to get ABA help for your daughter. You could also consider setting up your own program using college students who are familiar with ABA and/or Floortime – you could advertise at local colleges, ideally for Psychology majors and pay them a reasonable hourly rate. Google for more info on setting up an ABA or Floortime home program. Also consider looking on job boards, like sittercity.com, for some sitters with ABA experience.
