Online Places to Sell Your Stuff Locally

April 2, 2019 by Sally 8 Comments

Sell Your Stuff Memphis

If you’re looking for seasonal consignment sales – click here.

Consignment sales and stores are great, but sometimes you want to sell it yourself for free. Here are some online marketplaces the moms recommend where you can sell your stuff. Be prepared to arrange a place to meet to finalize your transaction, and stay safe! I’ve had pretty good luck getting rid of kids items (and home goods) on Facebook sites. I aggressively price my items (30% or less than the retail value new on Amazon) and I disclose massive amounts of information. Sizes, any flaws, with plenty of photos, what I used the items for, when I purchased it, and what I paid.

Where I list

I have been using Facebook Marketplace recently for home items, furniture, electronics, and kitchenware. If I’m listing on FB Marketplace, right before I click “submit” there is an option to also list on any groups I’m a part of.

I list on FreeBee Kids Facebook group if the item is over $25 (used selling price) and a kids item specifically.

I list on Designline Redesign/Resale of Germantown if it is furniture or home decor. For some reason this group won’t let me submit my Facebook Marketplace listing – so I have to enter it separately.

There’s no possible way to list every local Memphis municipality resale group – but if you’re trying to get rid of certain clothes, like Matilda Jane, Hanna Andersson, Mini Boden, etc, join a big group just for selling that item. If you’re trying to get rid of your Christmas village, join a Facebook group just for that, and consider paying the fee to ship it to someone in another state.

How much I ask

I always look to see what the item is selling for NOW and I price it at 1/3 the cost new. (I got this tip from consignment sales, and have found it normally works.) I’ve had pieces of furniture that should probably head to the landfill, and I’ve asked like $5 for a recliner or something. It’s worth it to me to not have that item go to the landfill. But I don’t want to figure out how to get the trash people pick it up. And I don’t want to lug it to GoodWill.

Information for my listing

I usually put size, dimensions, when I bought it, a screenshot if I can find my Amazon or Overstock order, how I used it in my home, tons and tons of photos, a picture of any flaws, that we are a smoke-free home and general area of the pickup (Kirby Woods). I put in the post that I’ll accept PayPal, Venmo, or cash.

Arranging pick up

I’m not scared at all of porch pickup. That is most often the most convenient for me. I figure the odds that someone breaks into my house just because they know my address is slim. Nothing that I have is so valuable that if I gave someone my home address (so I know their name), and they don’t leave the $15 that we agreed to, that I would be somehow financially compromised. I figure if someone is that desperate to “steal” the random ziplock baggie of My Little Ponies that I’m selling for $10, even though I know their name and Facebook profile, they can have them.

If I’m buying something from someone I know (friends of friends or I know they go to my kids’ school) I’ve been known to offer them $2 extra to deliver it to my house, or put it in my kid’s bag at school.

“New to you” clothes are great!
