Recommend OB/GYNs & Midwives

March 11, 2014 by Suzanne 120 Comments

Below are the OB/GYN recommendations from the East Memphis Moms on Facebook and Twitter.  Scroll to the bottom for Gynecologist (not OB) and Midwife recommendations.  If you have additional recommendations please add a comment to this post.  If you need a high risk OB please check this post.

I make big babies. Good thing this one came 10 days early

Ruch Clinic
6215 Humphreys Boulevard (Adjacent to the Baptist Hospital for Women)
7705 Poplar Avenue (Adjacent to Methodist Hospital- Germantown)

  • Dr. Laura Bishop
  • Heather Chauhan at Ruch Clinic
  • I second Dr. Laura Bishop and Dr. Heather Chauhan at the Ruch Clinic for an OB/GYN. And also Dr. Charles Yukon for a Pediatrician. All great doctors!
  • Dr. Bishop, Dr Chauhan @ Ruch Clinic, I have six babies with this group and they are wonderful!
  • I must agree with the many others who said Ruch Clinic and to see Dr. Heather Chauhan, or Dr. Laura Bishop.
  • I know a lot of the Ruch Clinic doctors have been mentioned, but I’d like to add Dr. Franklin Kennedy to that list. He’s one of the best OB/GYNs I’ve ever had.
  • Dr. Heather Chauhan! She has fabulous bedside manner. I hate to recommend her because then it will be even harder to get an appointment.
  • John Pickens @ Ruch Clinc is awesome!
  • Dr. FRANK KENNEDY at the Ruch Clinic. His bedside manner is wonderful. He helped me thru a difficult miscarriage and then the subsequent joyful delivery of my twins. My twin pregnancy was difficult and because of his expertise they both survived and now are thriving 7 yr olds. He also literally saved the life of our 13 yr old daughter who had a very rare GYN condition that was misdiagnosed by LeBonheur doctors. I trust my life and my children’s with him. After all, he saved each of my children’s lives. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HIM!!!
  • Doctors Pickens, Kennedy and Chauhan at Ruch Clinic are amazing! Have seen them all and have friends who have used them. Each has a very different personality, but very caring!
  • Dr. Pickens at the Ruch Clinic was supportive of my doing a VBAC nafter one c-section.
  • Dr. Laura Bishop at Ruch Clinic! The absolute BEST ob/gyn I’ve had to date. She helped me get through my issues conceiving and delivered my healthy baby boy. She’s also just wonderful at being attentive to your female needs. She’s also all about staying on top of the latest technology. She’s very skilled in robotic procedures. Love her!
  • Dr. Bishop has absolutely no personality.
  • 100% agree with you that Dr. Bishop’s bedside manner is seriously lacking. I went to her (just as a gyn) for several years as I was dealing with painful intercourse issues. After trying estrogen cream and having negative ultrasounds done, she told me that a lap surgery was the ‘next step’ in determining the cause of my issue; surgery turned up nothing (thankfully) but it was as if she was frustrated with me for being an enigma and I feel like she mentally threw up her hands at me. I felt like I had no options left! I got sick of her chilly personality and switched to Dr. Lynn and haven’t looked back since. I just wish I’d switched sooner. I feel like my surgery was unnecessary. And guess what? Dr. Lynn has been AWESOME and discussed other minimally invasive options for me that Dr. Bishop never even mentioned. Sorry for the rant; I am still frustrated two years later.

Adams Patterson
6215 Humphreys Blvd., Memphis (Baptist Women’s Hospital)
7705 Poplar Ave. Bldg B, Germantown (Methodist Germantown)

  • Dr. Leah Tonkin at Adams Patterson
  • Judy Williams, Chapman, and Tonkin are all great OBs at Adams Patterson.
  • Dr F. King OB at Adams Patterson is also great.
  • Anyone at Adams Patterson Group is great.
Dr. Judith Wiliams at Adams-Patterson OB-GYN.
Dr. Frank King at Adams Patterson. He is absolutely wonderful as are the other doctors and nurses in his practice.
  • I love mine. Frank King with Adams Patterson. Locations at both Baptist Women’s and Gtown Methodist.

Mid-South OBGYN
80 Humphreys Center, Memphis (Baptist Women’s Hospital)
7705 Poplar Ave., Germantown (Methodist Germantown)

  • The doctors at Midsouth OBGYN are great – Dr. Christa Crisler is mine.
  • Dr. Tom Greenwell at MidSouth OBGYN (901-747-1200) is awesome. He delivered all 3 of my children. One delivery had some complications that ended with an emergent c-section and although it was scary, everything went smoothly and Dr. Greenwell kept everyone calm. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Dr. G and his staff.
  • Dr. Greenwell @ Midsouth Ob is great
  • Dr. Neblett at Midsouth OBGYN. I hated going to those doctors, but he has a great bedside manner. He helped save the life of my 1 year old and myself when I had preeclampsia. I trust him with my life!!
  • Dr. Judi Carney.
  • Dr. Herbert Taylor. I have been going to him for years and absolutely love him. Unfortunately, he didn’t deliver my two children because they both were early. Dr. Neblett delivered my last, who is 3 weeks old, and he was wonderful too. I highly recommend MidSouth OBGYN!!
  • Dr. Elizabeth Mann with MOGA is excellent. She has delivered all three of my babies, and been there with us through 3 miscarriages as well.
  • Dr. Geisler has the worst bedside manner of any doctor I have ever been to. While explaining something going on in my pregnancy she poked fun at me.. after I waited 45 mins to see her… then still didn’t answer me after making fun of me.. and didn’t give me a chance to ask any other questions… after waiting 45mins to see here was in the room for 5-7min TOPS…. (thumbs down) As far as MOGA clinic as a whole I have volunteered in free clinics that are better then the MOGA clinic on Popular at Methodist Hospitals, parking is horrible, the clinic itself is VERY small, hectic, chaotic.. I’m so thankful I was early enough in my pregnancy that I could still switch clinics and doctors.

OBGYN Specialists
6401 Poplar Avenue, Suite 530, Memphis
OBGYN Specialists for doctors. Have had all 3 children with them and love them (all women’s group).

Dr. W. David Stinson
315 Walnut Bend South, Cordova
Dr. Kenneth Byrd is Dr. Stinson’s partner, and has seen me through 1 and three-quarters pregnancies. I highly recommend him for his calm and supportive bedside manner. My first daughter was post mature by a week and fairly large (9 lbs 11 oz), and he respected my wishes to have a natural birth. He let me know he would like to do a c-section, and his reasons, but did not pressure me. He is also very good about including Dad in any discussions, and making him feel like part of the process. He shares an office with Dr. Stinson.
PS He also sports a wicked fantastic mustache.

McDonald-Murmann Women’s Clinic
7205 Wolf River Blvd. Suite 150, Germantown

  • McDonald-Murmann Women’s Clinic. I see Dr. Martin. The entire practice is comprised of women. I like that.
  • Dr. Susan Murrmann
  • Beware of recommending entire ob/gyn practices because while some may love dr martin @ mcdonald murmann I did not like dr lee who delivered my 4 month old. You only see your own dr @ the practice.
  • Dr. Heather Donato is great
  • Dr. Cole
  • Dr Kyle Martin at McDonald Murmann and Dr Leslie Mayo. Both great Doctors and Finished top of their classes
  • McDonald Murrman-Dr. Kristi Cole. May be hard to get in as a new patient but well worth it! Very punctual on her appt. times too! Have never had to wait very long at all. Love her and all the other drs and staff at McDonald Murrmann-in fact, am going there today LOL!!!
  • At McDonald-Murmann Women’s Clinic: I’ve seen Dr. Lee (who delivered my first child) and I did not like her. She wasn’t easy to talk to and not open to discussing options for natural alternatives. She is a great surgeon though. I had Dr. Martin deliver my second. I like her much better – friendly and easy to talk to, but still not very supportive of natural options.
  • I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Christi Cole at McDonald Murman women’s clinic. Her mother was an OB/GYN and she is a fantastic doctor. The nurses at Baptist Women’s Hospital really bragged on her and loved working with her. She really listens to you and was phenominal during the labor and delivery. I mean phenominal. She truly cares about her patients, was very calm and together during a few scary parts of pregnancy and delivery. She is very upfront and honest, in a caring way…She’s THE BEST!

Women’s Physician Group
1469 Poplar Ave, Memphis
7705 Poplar Ave Bldg B, Germantown

  • Lanetta Anderson Brooks (especially if she is trying to have a natural birth or wants to work with a doula, etc).
  • There are a few docs that are supportive of natural births – Dr. Lanetta Anderson Brooks is my doctor and she is wonderful!
  • I second Dr. Brooks being wonderful and supportive of (essentially to the point of advocating for) natural birth. We had an awesome natural experience at Germantown Methodist with her, though I’m sure it wouldn’t compare to all the comforts of a home birth, we were pleased.
  • Dr. Grandberry of Women’s Physician Group is great. I saw her once when my Dr. (Dr. Carter) was delivering a baby. She has a great bedside manner and was very personable even though I wasn’t her patient per se. Dr. Rouselle of the same practice was very callous and rude as the Dr. on call when I thought I was leaking fluids. It was my first pregnancy and she was very terse when informing me that I would have to go to the hospital because I didn’t call during office hours. Dr. Grandberry of the same practice actually delivered my son. She made me feel stupid when I asked a question about her breaking my water. She also seemed inconvenienced by my labor and the birth of my son. My husband never actually felt like a part of my pregnancy with this group. He could never truly be a part of my appointments due to their rules and regulations. They did allow him to attend ultrasounds though. I won’t be returning to this practice for baby #2, it’s a shame because Dr. Carter and Anderson-Brooks are awesome. I can’t chance dealing with the other two again.
  • Dr. Lanetta Anderson Brooks is awesome, not Dr. Grandberry.

Dr. Betty Jo Dulaney
2157 Judicial Drive, Germantown

  • Dr. Betty Jo Dulaney…amazing OB. She is in Germantown.
  • Betty Jo Dulaney (in Germantown)!!!
  • Dr Betty Jo Dulaney in Germantown is the top “natural” provider in the area. She delivers all of her babies herself, performs all ultrasounds herself, and has one of, if not the lowest C Section rates in the city. Additionally, she is one of the only VBAC supporting physicians here. L & D nurses rave over her! I was with a large, fancy $$$ practice before her for 20 years and they delivered 2 of my children, but am so thrilled I found Dulaney for my 3rd!
  • Dr. Betty Jo Dulaney was so supportive of my unmedicated hospital birth with my doula! After my daughters birth she told me I did wonderfully! Love her!
  • I also loved my OB and natural minded!!! Also a huge plus-she does all the ultrasounds herself

Byrd and Stinson
315 South Walnut Bend Road, Cordova
I use Dr. Stinson of Byrd and Stinson. He delivered my first child and will deliver my second any day. He is very low key and low stress and was wonderful during my two miscarriages. His office is right near the corner of Germantown road and Walnut Grove. I highly recommend him.

Memphis OB/GYN
6215 Humphreys Blvd (Baptist Women’s Hospital)
7705 Poplar, Germantown (Germantown Methodist)

  • Dr. Cory Tinker of Memphis OBGYN is the best! He delivered my son and has been wonderful through every step of my pregnancy (including the million questions I always had!) and beyond. Professional, compassionate and solution-oriented.
  • Yep, Cory Tinker has been my ob/gyn, too. Highly recommended.
  • Dr. Cory Tinker MOGA. Awesome!!!
  • Dr. Cory Tinker. He is the best he will not leave the room until he has answered all of your questions. He is the best plus he’s a cutie pie!
  • Dr. Cory Tinker! Super gentle and nice. Will sit and answer any and all questions you have
  • I have seen dr Bannister since i was 14 & i love her. I had appts and ultrasounds every 2-3 weeks and she always helped all answer all my questions! I had issues bf at 4 months pp & she had noto problem sitting down to talk and let me cry. She initially gave me blunt remarks but she knew EXACTLY what she was talking about. Even now at my regular yearly she had to undo some serious rxs that my regular dr hd me on! The day i went into labor i cried bc she wasn’t on call that day..dr tinker was the one who delivered my son &i i was very against having a male dr at that time! He was very professional & i thought he was great! I was planning on having him as my backup doctor again! Now there was an older heavy set dr that i had to see at one of my checkups &i will NEVER see him again. He didn’t answer my questions, brushed off my emergency ultrasound results until Bannister was back in the office & made a quick reference (to my age, complications with a shortening cervix….i was 20!!!) as he was walking out the door.
  • I almost fell out of the chair when I saw all these recs for Dr. Tinker – he was the WORST! I was just one of a thousand patients for him, he could not have cared less about who I was or my birthing experience. Don’t let the pretty face fool you. He won’t remember you next week. I stuck with him for 39 weeks out of some weird ‘not wanting to make trouble’ ideal. I called the office days before my induction in tears over the thought of having that man in my delivery room. They switched me to Jason Mullenix and it was a breath of fresh air. He is amazing and extremely respectful. Make your appointment with him!
  • Coming from out of state to birth in Memphis, I initially desired a midwife natural hospital birth . However, after realizing that midwives are prohibited from practicing in Memphis hospitals…Dr. Jason Mullinex with MOGA was recommended by my doula. He has been amazing, and perhaps one of the nicest, most genuine doctors I have ever encountered. I can’t sing his praises enough. He completely supports that this is “our birth experience.” He takes time to answer all of my many questions, and supports our desires for this natural birth. If you’re looking for a doctor who will support you and your baby, Dr. Mullinex is a wonderful choice. He supports natural birthing, and has extensive knowledge and background with Ina May Gaskin, as he was the backup OB to “The Farm.” Also, another thing I truly respect about him, is that he delivers his patients, unlike some OBs. Amazing doctor and man, well-respected by my family and I. Pursuing a natural childbirth, other than home birthing is hard, praise The Lord for him.

OB/GYN Associates of the MidSouth
7705 Poplar Ave, Germantown (Germantown Methodist)
I would also recommend Dr. Donald Hamby at OBGYN Associates of the MidSouth , but was formerly at MidSouth OBGYN. He has seen me through 3 pregnancies and was wonderful. Dr. Greenwell delivered two of my children and while he was great the last time, he was quick to try and push an unnecessary Cesarean on me because I wasn’t pushing fast enough for him.

Bartlett Women’s Clinic
2996 Kate Bond Rd, Memphis
Dr. Rye Estepp. Very supportive of VBAC. Although there are several docs at this practice, they don’t pass you around-she delivers all her patients’ babies. She is so caring and easy to relate to. I am so glad I found her!

Kristin Miller OB/GYN
6750 Poplar Avenue Suite 210, Memphis
I highly recommend Dr. Kristin Miller. She is fantastic and without going into a really long story, she quite literally saved my life and that of my son. She has delivered most of the babies in our family over the last 10 years as well as many friends. Not only do all of the women share a fondness for her, she has handled some serious complications and issues so well that our husbands’ feel just as strongly about her skill and passion for her work.

Bluff City Obstetrics & Gynecology
3249 West Sarazens Cr, Memphis

  • Dr. Michael Stack terrific! Great personality and very attentive, both at the office and during my labor. He takes his time every visit to make sure he has answered any questions you have. I have been seeing him for the past 5 years, and had my son with him. Dr. Penn Joe actually delivered my son via c-section and was also great. Neither pushed a c-section until it became very obvious I would have to have one (and my husband and I agreed)….and this was through a very long labor, with very little and eventually no progression.
  • I LOVE Dr. Stack as well. He delivered 2 of my children and helped me through a very difficult miscarriage.

Gynecologist Only

A mom requested recommendations for a gynecologist who who specializes in woman who are pre-menopausal and have hormone issues.

Carol I. Lynn, M.D. Gynecology
2136 Exeter Dr. Suite 103, Germantown

  • She is super nice! She has her own practice. Dr. Lynn was with the Ruch Clinic for many years as an OB/GYN and left a few years ago to just focus on GYN. She is so great that all of her nurses left Ruch too and followed her to her new office. If she is not the best doc for your issues, she can and will tell you the person to go see.
  • I second dr Lynn!!
  • Definitely Dr. Lynn!
  • I fourth Dr. Lynn – she is the woman!
  • Dr. Carol Lynn in Germantown. She is super nice!

Dr. Indu Tejwani
6005 Park Ave, Suite 508, Memphis

Mestemacher Clinic For Women
7918 Wolf River Boulevard, Germantown

  • Christine Mestemacher, I’ve been seeing her since I was 18. Love, love her!
  • I use Mestamacher…. she is wonderful!!
  • Dr. Christine Mestemacher is the best doctor in this city!
  • I still take my 16 yo to Mestemacher because she has no major issues and only needs regular checkups. Mestemacher is gentle with younger girls who are going for the first time. I love her office decor…very uplifting.

Midwives

Trillium WomenCare
2610 Autumn Ave, Memphis

  • Amy Stewart banbury. She is the best there is. Think her practice is called trillium birth.
  • Amy Banbury is wonderful. I know moms who’ve delivered with Martina and Lynda and were both very happy. I’d be happy to answer any questions about home birth that the mom has. My son was born at home in December and it was spectacular!
  • Amy Stewart-Banbury delivered my 10lb 14oz baby boy on Christmas Eve in the comfort of my home! She is amazing! Very educated and caring.

I recently found out I was pregnant in May of this year, and used this page/website to research finding a new doctor for this pregnancy. I referenced this list probably 30 times looking for a new doctor. I did not like the one I used for the pregnancy & birth of my son, so I relied heavily on these reviews when deciding who I wanted to see.

I wanted to share that I went in to see Dr. Shannon Riedley-Malone at the Engbretson Women’s Clinic (she is no longer at MidSouth OBGYN) based on some comments on this site as well as a few other sites. She is with the Engbretson Center for Women off Ridgeway Loop.

Unfortunately, we found out I had a missed miscarriage at the first appointment today, & were told I lost the baby at 8 weeks (while I should be 12 weeks now). We are devastated, but I need to share that I was BLOWN AWAY by the way I was treated by her staff from the moment I walked in the door, to the ultrasound, getting my blood drawn, etc. They were so wonderful & kind to me & my husband.

Dr. Malone was incredible. I wish I used her sooner!! I haver never met a doctor who was so in touch with a patient. She spent a good amount of time with us today, actually CRIED with us over the news, and was very focused helping me with what I wanted (natural miscarriage, D&C, etc).

She was also so encouraging as well, stating that if I want to have a baby, she will do everything in her power to take care of me during a second pregnancy. She told us just how much she loved pregnant women & caring for pregnancies, so she would be honored to continue care. She ensured me that the next pregnancy (again – if I wanted to pursue another pregnancy), that I would be monitored weekly for the first 10-12 weeks until I felt comfortable. She encouraged me to go home & grieve, curl up in bed, and just cry. This is my second miscarriage, and my first (10 years ago) was very traumatic. She listed to me talk about that experience I had, and was just so supportive of my decision to get a D&C asap, rearranging her schedule tomorrow so I could have the procedure done immediately. Honestly, it was like I had a close friend there for me!

Additionally, while we were waiting on her to come back to the room, I overheard her in the hallway talking to a pregnant mama in such a sweet way. She was encouraging the mom to write her birth plan and bring it next visit, so they could talk about it at the next visit. I just loved listening to her talk to that patient, she sounded so in touch! Compared to my last OBGYN (who had just a terrible bedside manner & attitude in general), it made me excited to be a patient of hers, even through the loss.

I only saw her for an hour or so today, and she will be doing my D&C tomorrow, but I highly recommend her to anyone looking for an OBGYN in Memphis. Through tears this afternoon, my husband and I kept saying how much we loved her as a doctor already! Go to Dr. Shannon Riedley-Malone!!

Wanted to further update this review. Had my D&C yesterday, and Dr. Malone was so kind during the entire procedure. She walked me back to surgery, supporting me and making me laugh the whole way back there, & then held my hand while another nurse rubbed my arm until I fell asleep.

Additionally, the nurse in pre-op (after asking who my OB was) said that Dr. Malone is their favorite doctor up there, that she’s just the best, which to me says a lot about a doctor when the nurses are bragging on her!

Hands down, she is best doctor (not just OB-GYN) I’ve ever had. I’ve never liked a Dr. enough to actually leave a review, so that’s saying something about her care!

As a nurse and a patient of hers I have to agree with everything you have said! She is an amazing OB doctor. Very in tune with her patients! So glad you found her in your time of need!

Dr. Tinker is great. I absolutely loved him. I am a new patient and he listened to everything I had to say with such kindness. He reassured me with his thoughtful answers and his lengthy time he was in the room. Hands down the best OB/GYN experience I have had.

I moved here from a different city and tried several doctors in order to find one that I wanted to deliver my baby.

First, I tried MOGA. I tried several doctors there. I didn’t like any of the doctor’s including the nurse practitioner.

Next, I tried Dr. Stinson. I didn’t like anything about him. I was in his office in tears bleeding and scared that I would have another miscarriage. He showed no sympathy or empathy.

Next, I tried Dr. Riad Homsi. I didn’t see or feel anything special there.

Last, I tried Dr. Neblett and fell in love. He possessed all of the qualities that all of the other doctors/offices mentioned above lacked. He was always smiling, great bedside manners, and caring.

Yes, I know that I went through a lot of doctors. However, I was determined to find one that “I” felt was the best doctor for me. When I look for a doctor, I look for someone who makes me feel like they care every time they’re in the room with me. Dr. Neblett did that.

I HATED Dr. Stinson too. He rushed through appointments and completel ignored my birthplan during my birth. On top of that he was extremely rude to my doula and tried to tell me my baby was in distress because she didn’t cry when born when in fact she was just fine. I wouldn’t let him near me again ever.

I want to leave a review for Dr. Lanetta Anderson Brooks at the Women’s Physician Group. I made my appointment over a month in advance, and had completed all the necessary forms in advance via the Internet as well. On the day of my appointment, I waited 45 minutes past my appointment time, they didn’t have my submitted paperwork from the internet, the staff was rude, the clinic was small and crowded, when I asked about how much longer it would be at the 45 minute late mark (because my son had a dentist appointment I needed to be mindful of) I was told there were still two people ahead of me! and that I probably wouldn’t even see the doctor I chose, Anderson Brooks, but another doctor. I ended up leaving because the whole experience was so awful. I could only imagine what the rest of the care during my pregnancy would be like. Also, my copay was not refunded. I’m beyond frustrated and have *never* had such horrible service from a dr/clinic! I highly recommend avoiding them at all costs. It’s not worth the time and frustration.

I do not have experience with endometriosis, but I would also recommend Dr. Penn Joe. He visited me in the hospital when I had my son and I was ready to change doctors right then and there. He was caring, helpful, willing to listen, and did not make me feel rushed.

I love Dr. Tinker. He sat and talked with me about many different alternatives plus medication options. He saved my life. I was feeling so frustrated, and he was so patient and kind. He sat with me forever while I asked so many questions. I know that made him behind schedule, but he gave me his full attention. GREAT DR!

Dr. Michael Podraza with St. Francis Women’s Health and Fertility is absolutely wonderful!! My first is due at the end of July, and throughout my pregnancy he has been stellar. He even recommended to me that I should use a doula, and he got me in touch with one that suited us! Dr. Podraza is very low intervention and supportive of natural births. He’s quickly thorough, and will answer/address any questions or concerns raised by patient or partner. I’ve only had morning visits scheduled, and I do suggest appointments early as opposed to later. He is a very in-demand doctor! My husband and I both have nothing but wonderful things to say about him and his practice!

Carney actually delivered my little one via C-section because Hinote was out of town, but normally she delivers her own patients. Feel free to inbox me….oh and I rarely experienced her being behind schedule unless she was in an emergency procedure for another patient and even then, I was given the option to see someone else.

I moved to Memphis in 2013. I was 7 months pregnant with my second child and went to Dr. Hinote at Mid South OB/GYN on a new colleague’s recommendation. I have really enjoyed working with Dr. Hinote: she’s friendly and laid back and doesn’t get alarmist about anything or give strict restrictions if not backed by science. When I had symptom concerns she researched different treatments and referred me to a specialist (for vein issues). She was at my son’s birth and all went well. I am very happy with her.
That said, Mid South OB/GYN is regularly running an hour or more behind schedule, which I find beyond annoying, but I’ve heard that’s normal for clinics around here. The staff is friendly and the clinic is lovely.

Dr. Rye Estepp is AMAZING!!! I have PCOS and on my first visit with her I let her know that I’d like to have children someday and was losing hope because my previous doc’s would treat it like a nail in the coffin. She put her hand on my knee, laughed, and said “Girl I’m putting a baby in you!” 10 months after her regimen of ovulation treatments, we got preggers!! This woman gave me so much hope in that first visit that she now has a patient for life out of me. Her bedside manner is fabulous, she listens, her support staff is attentive, heck she even does all of her results call backs her self, including on weekends! I cannot recommend her highly enough, I adore her.

Update: Just a few months after my initial review, I had to be admitted for severe Pre-eclampsia. Dr. Estepp delivered my healthy 3lb baby that came almost 9 weeks early via emergency c-section. A few weeks after birth, I had to be re-admitted for an emergency gallbladder removal. Not only did she check on me regarding that stay, she even had them put me back in my L&D suite for recovery so that I could be close enough to NICU to continue to nurse and do skin to skin with my daughter.

Dr. Riedley-Malone at Midsouth OBGYN is the most amazing OB GYN I have ever met, and I’ve met a lot being in the medical field. Their office is also very nice, all support staff are wonderful and she delivers 98% of her own patients. She is so dedicated, thoughtful and simply the best! She is very willing to let you do a natural childbirth with as little intervention as the hospital/NICU will allow. I cannot say enough good things about her!

From a nurse of 22 years in the mother/baby world….For those who are planning a home birth or a hospital birth with a doula or birth plan, please consider what you are risking. As a nurse I have seen far too many babies die or have severe disabilities because emergency help could not be provided in a timely manner due to being in the home or in a hospital situation where babies have needed to be delivered via c-section but the mother refused because her doula advised her to wait. Trust me when I say this, it happens far too frequently. And it’s heartbreaking. Please listen to the medical experts. When patients come in with a birth plan, the NICU typically gets those babies because moms are so insistent on this perfect delivery. But that doesn’t always happen. In my mind the perfect delivery outcome is a healthy baby. The rest of the birth plan is a bunch of BS. If you want to come to a hospital to have your child but then refuse to listen to our advice then just stay home. Have your baby at home. But know you’re putting your life & the life of your child at risk. There is not a doula or midwife who will ever convince me otherwise.

Do not go to Dr. Kyle Martin at McDonald-Murmann Women’s Clinic. Although she is nice, she is really into unnecessary medical intervention. She asked how I felt about induction at my first visit (should have been my first clue). She tried to pressure me into doing an induction if I did not go into labor by 40 weeks for no reason. I refused. On the day she had wanted to induce me, she accidentally broke my water during the exam. Needless to say, my body was not ready. It ended up being a c-section due to not dilating. I was very upset. I will not be going back there, and have found a new doctor who supports vbac for future pregnancies.

I never thought I would have a male OB/GYN, but he is so wonderful and makes you feel at ease. He walks you through everything, and there is never any surprises. He listens very carefully, and always goes over things again. I just love him. My Mom goes to Dr. Albritton, who reminds me of Dr. Tinker. She asked Dr. Albritton who I should see in the group since he does not deliver anymore, and with no hesitation recommended Dr. Tinker. To me and my Mom, that is all we needed to hear. He was right! If you are seeking a natural child birth experience OR are desiring additional support throughout the birthing process, I would highly recommend considering a doula! Birth Works is a great organization. In particular, I would recommend Mary Beth Best. She took the time to really get to know me and my husband. Not only did she meet with us regularly leading up the birth, but continued to follow up with us after the birth of my son. She did everything from lunches, late night visits, lessons on baby wearing, and even exercised in a pool with me to get my labor going! She stayed by my side throughout the 26 hours of labor. I just love her and am so thankful to have had her wisdom and encouragement through my first birth. I cannot sing her praises enough!

I have gone to Adams Patterson for about 4 years now. I agree with the above that the doctors are great, but the nurses and staff are horrible. They mess up every test I’ve ever had, insurance staff always submits incorrect information, and the from desk lady at the Germantown location is horribly rude. Sometimes the nurses/staff are nice on the phone, but many times they are irritated and it makes me uncomfortable to call. I will be looking for a new practice after I deliver. It is a shame because the doctors are great, but after several medical scares because tests were not sent off or done correctly, I feel like I have no choice. Doctors = great. Other staff = awful.

Dr. I can’t chance dealing with the other two again.

answer all my questions!

I almost fell out of the chair when I saw all these recs for Dr.

Coming from out of state to birth in Memphis, I initially desired a midwife natural hospital birth .

Do not ever use Dr. Susan Murrmann if McDonald Murrmann Women’s Clinic. She is quite possibly the rudest, most stuck up woman alive. After testing positive for gestational diabetes her office waited two weeks to call me and give me my results because she was out of town. I’m glad nothing serious happened to myself or my baby. I never felt like she cared about me, granted I know she probably sees hundreds of patients a week, she could at least pretend to give a crap. While in the hospital several nurses gave me horrified looks when I told them who my doctor was. I have been told that she is a great OBGYN but that she only really cares about her plastic surgery patients because that’s where she makes her money.

    Thank you for this post!

Does anyone know if the midwives listed here (or other midwives in Memphis) perform births at hospitals rather than home births? My husband and I hope to get pregnant next year and I have been researching options for birth. I don’t feel fully comfortable with a home birth as a first time mom but I love the concept of a midwife.

I do not recommend Dr. Sherry Li from the Women’s Health Specialists in Germantown. She was my OB/GYN during a miscarriage. She pushed a D&C on me without explaining any of the risks, and then ended up missing some of the tissue so I had to go in for a second D&C. Between the first and second D&C, she did not do a single ultrasound to figure out why I was still cramping/bleeding so badly. She assumed I had an infection so gave me antibiotics, and then assumed after those didn’t work that it was hormonal. After hormones didn’t work she made me take birth control (in high doses) to see if that would stop the bleeding. I finally had tissue start coming out of me, (which was rotten and smelled like rotten hamburger, TMI sorry) and that is when it was obvious that tissue was left behind. I feel like she disregarded my feelings and my pain and suffering as not a big deal, and I would not recommend her to anyone. She has a cold bed side manner as well.

Agreed. Dr. Li was the first gyn Dr. I saw since recently relocating to Memphis from out of sate. Horribly disappointed and after the first cold, impersonal interaction it was clear I needed to move on to search for a higher level of standard. My former OB/Gyn was an expert in the field and consulted to other OB/Gyn in the city (she was an academic Ob/gyn. The medical history she took was poor and rushed.

I agree I did not enjoy my visit with her. I found out I was expecting very early and had some cramp, so of course it being my first I freaked out, and was desperate to see anyone. When I was there my pee test came back negative and told me that I missed reed my test, I am pretty sure I can tell the different between a plus and minus. She then took my blood for testing, I left and cried for about 30 minutes because we had been trying. She called me 3 days later to tell me my blood test was positive and that I was barely pregnant, which I thought was rude to, you are either expecting or not. I didn’t get a sorry or anything. She mad me feel I was like an idiot. I would never advise someone to see her.

I would just like to say, that my OB, Dr. Jason Mullinex from MOGA (they have several locations but I see him at the Wolfchase location by the mall in Cordova) is THE BEST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER SEEN, HANDS DOWN. AWESOME. If you are in Memphis and need an OB/GYN, he is your man. Seriously. He is a wonderful person, listens to your concerns, and is GENUINELY CONCERNED ABOUT YOU, not the money and not to “get you out the door” like so many of them are. He is such a great person and I am so happy I found him!!!!!!!

I have to sing Dr. Riad Homsi’s praises. He is in a group by himself (used to be in a larger group but he broke off) so you get in and out very quickly. AND you’re talking to the same 2 nurses every time you go in there. He is overly cautious which I appreciated when I had to have an emergency C-section. I started at Ruch Clinic and every time I went there, I had to wait 30-45 minutes in the waiting room. Knowing I would have to go to the Dr. quite a bit throughout my pregnancy, I just didn’t want to spend that much time in the waiting room during my visit. Dr. Homsi with Just for Women on the Baptist Memphis campus. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. You won’t regret him.

I appreciate your comments because I had one appointment that involved an hour and 30 minute wait with a 25 dollar copy and the doctor only spent 15 minutes with me. Then I was told to come back for fasting labs and had to wait an hour. I think I was going to pass out in the waiting room. The secretary at the front desk said no one was even getting las drawn right now. I think it doesn’t matter if a doctor is good if they don’t even have time to see you.

Ruch Clinic always had positive experiences for me until I had to see someone who was not my doctor. Dr Kennedy was always a God-send!! When my insurance changed I was referred over to Dr. Homsi and I have been very pleased with him as well. If my insurances changes back though i will go back to Rich Clinic

I would also like to recommend Dr. Rye Estepp from Mid-South OB GYN. She really enjoys every aspect of women’s health care especially about infertility, laproscopic and robotic surgery, and adolescent medicine.
She’s not only a doctor but a wife and a mother that’s why she really knows what women need.

I gave birth at home last year with Martine Benson and Missy Padgeant at Full Circle Midwifery. I had a wonderful experience. Loved my prenatal care and home birth. They were friendly, warm, relaxed, knowledgeable, gave me my privacy, and were just such a positive force to have around. I couldn’t recommend them more.

Martine Benson was one of my midwives during the prenatal and postnatal care and all three of my children’s home births. My eldest is now 26 years old. The other two are still in their teens. I highly recommend her and her group! (And she definitely has YEARS of experience…! )

Erin is right. Dr. Herbert actually helped my sister a lot when she about to deliver her child. All the consultations and check up were done smoothly and regularly. I guess things in Midsouth are fully organize. They could be the best Memphis obgyn. I actually suggest them to my friends and colleagues. This post is really good. It helps out a lot of people. Thanks a lot!!!

If I were you I’d join Memphis Mothers of Multiples and ask them that question. I’ve heard lots of moms rave about this national organization (I don’t know anything about the local chapter) http://www.memphismomsofmultiples.org/

Just moving from out of town.. likely for insurance reasons go to Methodist. Are there any OBGYN doctors offices attached to the hospital? I would prefer a “group”.. also if anyone has had experience with a doctor when they are considered high risk.. I was with my first pregnancy and think I will likely be this next time too.

Dr. Michael Stack at MOGA is terrific!

I LOVE Dr. Stack as well. He delivered 2 of my children and helped me through a very difficult miscarriage. I was very unhappy to hear that he had moved out of state. I’m in the process of looking for a new OBGYN as we speak. I don’t think
i will find what Dr. Stack had to offer though. 🙁

Dr. Love her!

100% agree with you that Dr.

Dr.

In reference to Dr. Hamby, if you have PCOS or are intolerant of birth control, I suggest you steer clear. Because of what I went through while under the care of Dr. Hamby, I should have sued him for malpractice. Because I have PCOS, he felt it was necessary to tell me that it was “damn near impossible” (his words.) for me to have children. I left in tears. And two years later gave birth to a healthy, wonderful 8lb 13oz baby boy under the care of a completely different doctor in my hometown. He put me on two different birth control pills that both made me I’ll and mentally unstable and when I had stopped them on my own and came back for an appointment, he was livid with me and told me so. He must have made a complete turn around since I last saw him. For the sake of his patients, I hope so.

I too have PCOS and had a similar experience with Dr. Tejwani who told me there was no way I could ever have children and should go ahead and look into adoption if I wanted to be a mother – in the least sensitive way positive. Less than a year later i got pregnant and my son is now almost 8.

Another doctor at MidSouth OBGYN is Dr.
